Zero fuel cost, no waiting for a three-phase window, and a pump that runs whenever the sun is up.

For a farmer outside Raipur, electricity is rarely the biggest cost. Diesel is. A 5 HP pump set running through kharif and rabi burns a fuel bill that rises every year and cannot be planned around.
A solar water pump in Raipur replaces that recurring cost with a one-time capital cost, most of which the PM KUSUM scheme can cover. This guide covers sizing, pricing and the practical details that decide whether the system actually performs.
Three local conditions line up favourably.
Irradiance. Raipur district receives roughly 5.0 to 5.5 kWh per square metre per day across some 300 clear days. A solar pump here delivers more water per installed kilowatt than one in most of northern India.
Seasonal fit. Peak irrigation demand falls in the rabi season from November to March - exactly when Chhattisgarh's skies are clearest and panels are most efficient in the cooler air. The monsoon dip in output coincides with the period you need pumping least.
Grid independence. Agricultural feeders in the district supply three-phase power on a rostered schedule, often at inconvenient hours. A solar pump runs on its own schedule, in daylight, whenever you choose to irrigate.
| Pump | Suits | Typical Head | Daily Discharge | Cost Before Subsidy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 HP | Kitchen garden, up to 1 acre | Up to 30 m | 30,000 - 50,000 L | Rs 1.0 - 1.3 lakh |
| 2 HP | 1 - 2 acres, shallow borewell | Up to 50 m | 60,000 - 90,000 L | Rs 1.5 - 1.8 lakh |
| 3 HP | 2 - 3 acres | Up to 70 m | 80,000 - 1,20,000 L | Rs 2.0 - 2.5 lakh |
| 5 HP | 3 - 5 acres | Up to 100 m | 1,20,000 - 1,80,000 L | Rs 2.8 - 3.5 lakh |
| 7.5 HP | 5 - 8 acres | Up to 150 m | 1,80,000 - 2,50,000 L | Rs 4.0 - 5.0 lakh |
| 10 HP | 8+ acres or community use | Up to 180 m | 2,50,000 - 3,50,000 L | Rs 5.5 - 7.0 lakh |
Acreage alone does not size a pump. Two 5-acre farms with borewells at 40 m and 120 m need very different systems, because the energy required rises with head. This is why we measure before quoting.
| Factor | Solar (5 HP) | Diesel (5 HP) | Grid Electric (5 HP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Rs 2.8 - 3.5 lakh | Rs 25,000 - 40,000 | Rs 30,000 - 50,000 plus connection |
| Cost after subsidy | Substantially reduced | No subsidy | No subsidy on pump |
| Annual running cost | Nil | Rs 40,000 - 80,000 | Tariff dependent |
| Annual maintenance | Rs 2,000 - 5,000 | Rs 8,000 - 15,000 | Rs 3,000 - 8,000 |
| Availability | Daylight hours | Any time, if fuelled | Rostered supply window |
| Working life | 25 yrs panels, 10-15 yrs pump | 5 - 8 years | 8 - 12 years |
The diesel column is what makes the case. The upfront gap closes in three to five seasons, and everything after that is retained income.
PM KUSUM Component B supports standalone solar pumps for farmers, with central and state support that can together reach a large share of project cost, the farmer contributing the balance. Rates vary by component, pump capacity and scheme year, so confirm current figures when you apply rather than relying on a number in an article.
Documents usually required are land ownership records, Aadhaar, a bank passbook, a passport photograph and borewell details. We prepare and file the application for our customers - the broader subsidy landscape is covered in our subsidy and finance guide.
A typical solar pump installation takes one to two days: array foundation and structure, module mounting, controller installation, pump lowering and cable termination, then flow testing against the design figure.
Maintenance is light but not zero. Field dust settles faster than urban dust, so clean the panels every two to three weeks in the dry season. Check the controller enclosure seal before the monsoon, and have the pump inspected annually for impeller wear. Our maintenance guide covers the routine.
We supply and service solar pumps across Raipur district and the wider state - Abhanpur, Arang, Tilda, Dharsiwa, Kharora and Mandir Hasaud, extending to Dhamtari, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur and Korba. Our agricultural solar pump guide covers the farming context in more depth.
Before subsidy, roughly Rs 1.0 to 1.3 lakh for 1 HP, Rs 2.0 to 2.5 lakh for 3 HP, Rs 2.8 to 3.5 lakh for 5 HP and Rs 5.5 to 7.0 lakh for 10 HP. PM KUSUM support can cover a large share of that.
As a guide: 1 HP for up to 1 acre, 2 HP for 1 to 2 acres, 3 HP for 2 to 3 acres, 5 HP for 3 to 5 acres, 7.5 HP for 5 to 8 acres and 10 HP beyond that. Borewell depth and water table matter just as much as acreage, so the figure needs confirming on site.
Yes, at reduced flow - typically 30 to 50 per cent of peak on heavily overcast days. Irrigation demand is also at its lowest during the monsoon because of rainfall, so the two tend to offset each other.
Surface pumps suit open wells, ponds and canals where the water is within about 7 metres of the surface. Submersible pumps are needed for borewells, which covers most of Raipur district. Depth is what decides it.
The panels carry a 25-year performance warranty. The pump and controller typically run 10 to 15 years with routine servicing, after which only those parts need replacing - the array keeps working.
A solar pump sized from a brochure will disappoint you. Sized from your actual borewell depth, water table and crop pattern, it will quietly remove your diesel bill for the next two decades. The difference is one site visit.
